Love & Lies

Once up on a Valentines Day...

[Anonymous kid] Daddy Daddy...

[Anonymous Dad] Yes Timmy !

[Ano...eh... Timmy] Daddy, I've got an assignment to write for school. Will you help me? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

[Dad] Oh ! Okay !! What's yr assignment on?

[Timmy] Love !

[Dad] Wow ! You have an assignment on it ? In my days, the teachers were against our er... assignments ;)

[Timmy] No Dad, we are supposed to write something on the meaning of love...its Valentines day, na !

[Dad] Love...hmm lemme see !

[Timmy] wait..wait... Lemme write it down... :)

[Dad] Love... Love is about Lies !

[Timmy] Lies ???

[Dad] You see, Timmy... All my life, i have said lies in love & i've found it to be the best gift you can give a person.

[Timmy] How, Dad?

[Dad] Well, the first time i met yr mom was for a Valentines day 7 yrs ago. She was not the hottest of chicks in college, if you know wt i mean...

[Timmy] Hot chick ?

[Dad] You get it in due time, son... ;)

Anyways... i saw this cute girl standing at a corner of the dance floor. I heard one of my friends say that she couldn't get any date for the party.

So here i was, cursing my luck as my date's grandmom expired n that left me in the same predicament ?

[Timmy] Pedica ??

[Dad] Predicament...means..eh, problem !

[Timmy] Oh...

[Dad] So i went upto yr Mom n told her.."Hey, How come such a beautiful lady like you does not have all the guys crooning over you?"

Now, i knew very well that even i wouldn't have asked her to dance if i had a choice, but it was that one little lie that got us together !

[Timmy] But Dad, aint it bad to lie ?

[Dad] Son, sometimes you have to lie to make the ppl you love happy !

Every Valentines day after that, i used to tell yr mom that she was the most beautiful girl in the whole world.

Now yes, i think she's cute & pretty in a special kind of way, but you tell me...Do you think she has the legs of Sharon Stone and the figure of Alicia Silverstone ?

[Timmy] Eh... I dont know any of these stones, dad !

[Dad] Hmm.. ok...Lets just say that yr mom was just an ordinary Wilma from the Flintstones !

[Timmy] I know Wilma ! I know Wilma !!

[Dad] Hehe... & then again...

When yr mom was pregnant with you... she used to ask me every day how she looked ? Did she look fat ?

Now frankly, she had gained about 30-40 pounds... & was always in one of her moods..

But i'd tell her.."Nooooooooooooo Honey, you are glowing ! You look fabulous !!

Now if i told her she looked like a fat cow, it would have hurt her !

[Timmy] Ya...

[Dad] So you see son...Love is when you say those little lies to keep someone happy !

ok... i've gotta go now... All the best with yr assignment...

[Timmy] Bye Dad !
............................

[Timmy] Love means lying ??? Maybe i'll ask Mom

Mommyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...

[Timmy] Mom..Mom... i have an assignment for school...you will help me, na !

[Mom] Timmy, you know i'v to go out with daddy in another 1/2 hr

[Timmy] Pleaseeeeeeeee Mommy !

[Mom] ok...Timmy. wts the topic ?

[Timmy] Eh... Love !

[Mom] Love...Love is about knowing the goodness of a person's heart, honey !

[Timmy] Goodness of heart ? huh ?

[Mom] Its like this...

When i was in college, yr Dad used to tell me i should be in hollywood. Now i knew he was just lying, but i also knew that he dint want me in hollywood, but rt next to him!

& when i was pregnant, i used to look so fat i looked like Santa Claus ! But yr Dad would say i was looked weak n would feed me everything he could find !

His lies were so dumb, i even thought i had married a stupid...but the truth is that this stupid cared enough to lie...just to make me happy !

[Timmy] But... he was lying, rt ?

[Mom] Well honey...he was just being a guy !

& i knew everytime that he was lying to me... but every single time, i also knew that he said those lies coz he loved me !

[Timmy] Hmm...

[Mom] Ok honey... i'v to go get ready now. byeeeee

Enjoy the Life

The
Rain

It was a busy
morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have
stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an
appointment at 9:00 am.
  I took his vital
signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone
would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I
was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was
well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to
remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of
his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as
he was in such a hurry.

The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to
the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her
health.

He told me that
she had been there
for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.

As we
talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.

He
replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in
five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every
morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'

He smiled as he
patted my hand and said,

'She doesn't
know me, but I still know who she is.'

I had to hold back
tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,

'That is
the kind of love I want in my life.'

True love is
neither physical, nor romantic.

True love is an
acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not
be.

With all the jokes
and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there is one that comes along that has an
important message.. This one I thought I could share with you.

The
happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make
the best of everything they have.

I hope you share this with someone you
care about. I just did.

'Life isn't about
how to survive the storm,

But how to dance in the
rain.'

We are all getting Older

Tomorrow may be our turn.
Enjoy life now-it has an expiration date!

Cool touching sweet Matrimonial Ad

Now that I have seen almost 25 years of my life and most of it without anyone who I could in the true sense call as a friend…..I have been thinking now for a while as to how my spouse oughta be…

# # # # I am not looking for only a beautiful, slim and an intelligent girl…….They are all cliché.. The ones that matter are:

The first prerequisite I expect of my wife --- no it isn't the ability to understand me, that's the second---- the first one's a sense of humor for me and all my nonsense

She must sleep in my lap and allow me into hers. She must run her hand into my hair and fight me with pillows as often as she can.

She must allow me to disturb her, Which I will, ---no matter how busy and serious she is and I am--- , while she goes about our household chores.

She must sit with me shoulder in shoulder when we watch the late night movie together and must oblige to have a midnight walk anytime in the night.

When the curry isn't nice and I stare into her eyes, she must straight away go and make an omlette for me.  (Will I do it for her??)

When she is downright tired she must flirt with me to win a cup of tea or a glass of cold water. She must be ready to blow a kiss any time any day and any place. By the way I take kiss only on lips.

She should call me nicknames and how innovative she coins out new ones the better and must be prepared to confront some deadly ones in return. She can call me 't’, ’u’ or anything as am not at all particular about those pronouns.

She got every right to beat me up when I annoy her while she watches those dreary serials. She can also extract what she wants of me on woman's day. And I am also ready to share her pre-marital crushes and secrets.

On those rare occasions when we might fight and then go on a mourning spree, it can continue for the night. The next morning must again be normal.

I ain't promising her a paradise but yes she will always get more of my love than our children.

And finally, she must have a higher life expectancy than me. I may not be able to live without her…..

Kindness Pays!!!

Kindness Pays!!!
There was once this guy who was very much in love with his girl.
This romantic guy folded 1,000 pieces of paper cranes as a gift to his girl.

Although, at that time he was just a small fry in his company, his future doesn't seem too bright, they were very happy together. Until one day, his girl told him she was going to Paris and will never come back. She also told him that she cannot visualize any future for the both of them, so they went their own ways there and then... Heartbroken, the guy agreed. But when he regained his confidence, he worked hard day and night, slogging his body and mind just to make something out of himself.

Finally with all the hard work and the help of friends, this guy had set up his own company ..
You never fail until you stop trying. One rainy day, while this guy was driving, he saw an elderly couple sharing an umbrella in the rain walking to some destination. Even with the umbrella, they were still drenched. It didn't take him long to realize they were his girl's parents. With a heart in getting back at them, he drove slowly beside the couple, wanting them to spot him in his luxury sedan. He wanted them to know that he wasn't the same any more; he had his own company, car, condo, etc.
He made it! What he saw next confused him, the couple was walking towards a cemetery, and so he got out of his car and followed...and he saw his girl, a photograph of her smiling sweetly as ever at him from her tombstone and he saw his paper cranes right beside her...

Her parents saw him. He asked them why this had happened. They explained, she did not leave for France at all. She was ill with cancer. She had believed that he will make it someday, but she did not want to be his obstacle... therefore she had chosen to leave him. Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. She had wanted her parents to put his paper cranes beside her, because, if the day comes when fate brings him to her again...he can take some of those back with him... Once you have loved, you will always love. For what's in your mind may escape but what's in your heart will remain forever.

The guy just wept.....The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside her knowing you can't have her, see her or be with her ever again.........hope you understand. Find time to realise that there is one person who means so much to you, for you might wake up one morning losing that person who you thought meant nothing to you.

KINDNESS Pays !

Love Story - Unexpected Climax

Nice and different one……
Do Read……

REALITY BITES

OK… So I was back in bench… I was a free bird once again… No more boarding of 7: 30 buses… No more onsite calls… No more work… I was released… Hurray!!!

Just then my mobile rang. It was my father.

“Hello… How are you?”

“Fine, how are you father?”

“I am fine. How is work going on? Are you busy...”

“Work?… Uh… Well… You see… Right now I don’t have work…” I gulped as I said these words.

“What?!!! You don’t have any work? Youngsters should work at least 12 hours a day. You are getting salary every month right?! You should take the initiative… Do you know what Gandhiji has said about work?... He said…”

My father was in the mining sector. There is nothing called bench in his line of work. Until the rise of IT industry, to be in bench is to be sitting in a classroom or in front of a tea shop.  And now, to the outside world, a guy in an IT company, sitting in bench, is a lazy and incompetent employee who should be laid off to recruit a better one.

I had a difficult time explaining to my father that I was just released from a project and will soon be put into another one, in the meantime doing any internal work. At last the call ended although I knew perfectly well he wasn’t convinced yet.

Three days passed. My enthusiasm to be in bench was dampened by my colleagues. Especially to meet a fellow employee in food court after a long time was more discouraging.

“Hi dude. How are you? How is your project going on?”

“Uh… I am in bench dude… Hey did you watch Inception?...” I desperately tried to change the subject. But it was futile.

“Bench?!!! You said the same when I asked you six months earlier…”

Idiot. I got into a project later that lasted for a couple of months and he knew it perfectly.

“No no. I was into a proj…”

“Hey I have a call now. See you later.” He hurried without letting me finish.

I retired to my cubicle with a heavy heart. One of my friends beckoned me to have some coffee.

“No da. I am tired. You have coffee now. I will have later” I said. As a matter of fact, I was really tired.

“Summa thaana irukka? Vaada!!! (You are jobless right? Come!!!)”

‘Summa’!!! (Jobless) The word echoed in my ears like thunder. The world around me darkened. Whatever could I do to avoid this insult in future? I began to maintain a low profile by staying in my cubicle longer that I used to, shortening lunch and other breaks. Days passed very slowly… I was tired of reading the same forwarded emails everyday.

For a change I decided to read the posts in MCITY INK. I found out that although a few were very different, many posts were based on a certain templates that closely resembled each other. The central theme – Love; with the following variations:

·         Guy sees girl. Describer her. First half over. One side love. Guy proposes. Girl rejects. Second half over.
·         Guy sees girl. Describer her. First half over. One side love. Guy proposes. Girl accepts. Second half over.
·         Guy sees girl. Describer her. First half over. Both love each other. Parents reject. Second half over.
·         Guy sees girl. Describer her. First half over. Both love each other. Parents accept. Second half over.

Despite being poor at writing, I felt an urge to write at least one post and started typing a story on MS WORD. It looked as if I was doing some documentation work so my colleagues didn’t bother to question me. I finished the story, posted it and went for lunch.

When I was back, I saw a comment on my story. It was from a girl named Jyothi. She was online at that time so I pinged her to say thanks.

“Hi Jyothi! Thanks a lot for your comments J

“Hi! You are most welcome!!!”

It was really boring to chat with the same girls everyday so I extended the conversation to while away the time.

“You see. Most of the love stories in our MCITY INK don’t have a twist at the end. They are very predictable…
“Hmmmm…”

“Enna pannureenga?” (What are you doing?)

“What? Hey I don’t know Tamil yaar… I am from Bengal”

Excellent! I always wanted to befriend a north Indian girl (South Indian girls don’t ask me why).  I tried my luck.

“Wow! Bengal? I like to watch Mithun Chakraborthy’s films… He is a good actor…”

That’s the only Bengali actor I have ever heard of. My father mentioned his name once when he was talking about vintage movies. I don’t even know how he looks.

“Mithun??? I hate his movies yaar…”

Clean bowled. First attempt backfired horribly… I was undeterred though. This mission must succeed. I continued giving careful considerations to what I was going to type henceforth.

“Oh. Well… I haven’t watched much of his movies I must say … What movie did you watch recently?”

“Dostana… I liked it yaar…”

“Oh I see… That’s a great movie… I watched it thrice…”

Lies after lies… I haven’t watched a hindi movie since Kaho Na Pyar Hai (which too was Greek and Latin to me then).

“Will you teach me Tamil?” She asked.

What a stroke of luck!!! Just when I was scratching my head on how I should develop my forthcoming interactions with this girl, she has given me a perfect lead.

From that day a series of conversations began. Everyday I used to ping her early in the morning till I leave for the day. I understood that she too was in bench which was a great advantage for me. We used to discuss a variety of topics for hours and hours. Whatever she says, I would agree with expressions like ‘Oh!’, ‘Wow!’, ‘Fantastic!’ although there would be nothing admirable in them. This went on for a few weeks.

After a month, I entered level 2. I got her mobile number and started messaging her. My friends started suspecting my behavior as they used to see our instant messenger window always open.

“Dei machan!!! (brother-in-law – often used to address close friends)
Ennada eppa pathalum yaaro Jyothi nu oru ponnoda chat pannikitte irukka? (You seem to be chatting with a girl named Jyothi often).”

“Huh…. Jyothi ah? Illada (No!!!)”

“Poi solladha da. Naan pathen…(Don’t lie. I saw)”

“Oh! Andha Jyothi ah? Athu college senior da. (Oh! That Jyothi? That is my college senior dude)”

There was no end to my lies. At home, my mother used to shout at me for messaging till 11:30 to which I would respond that it was about my project or was playing a game on my mobile.

A few months passed and chatting with Jyothi became an integral part of my life. I couldn’t imagine a day without pinging her at least once. I used to feel a tickle in my heart whenever I hear my friends tease her with me. Yes. I found the right girl for me.

I made up my mind to convey my decision to my parents first. It was a silent evening at our home as usual. I approached my mother who was busy with some envelopes.

“Mother!!! I wish to tell you something… I…”

“Hey!!! Look at this girl da. Her name is Priya. Your father and I have decided that this is one you must marry and….”

All hell broke loose… I defended my decision. My mother defended hers. My father and brother took neutral stance (my brother was more interested in enjoying the fight anyway). A full week passed with the house divided on opinions. My mother was against all three factors concerning my decision; love, north Indian girl and moreover she is from IT industry. She argued that Priya is a very good girl… She is a doctor… From a good family… etc… etc… etc… I didn’t heed. My love was more important for me.

The following week I decided to disclose Jyothi about my love. I believed she will accept me, if she hears that I have fought against my parents and rejected their choice. I pinged her and started a talk as usual. Soon it was time to open my heart.

“Jyothi… I wished to tell you this… I…”

“Hey I forgot to tell yaar… I am getting engaged next month…”

Nooooo! Never!!!! I wouldn’t allow this to happen… I couldn’t digest what I read on the messenger window. Oh God!!! I started to cry like a child… I wiped my tears and typed with great restraint.

“Are you interested in this marriage?”

“Not much yaar!!! I want to develop my career first… Anyway it’s in fate’s hands”

Nonsense! These girls are always like this. When the moment arrives, they back off blaming fate and God. Neither fate nor God forced her into this engagement. I was thinking fast. It’s not too late. If I tell her my decision immediately then the course of things may change. It will be better if I meet her personally and discuss it.

“Jyothi… I wish to tell you something… We will meet tomorrow at FC2…”

“Hmmmm. OK yaar…”

I choose it to be the next day because it was February 14th… The day dawned and I was all set to tell her how much I loved her… How much I wanted to share my life with her… How many hurdles I crossed when chatting with her… How hard I fought with my family for her… She will definitely empathize… She would feel my heart… She would accept my love… By the time we leave the food court, we will be made for each other…

It was around 10:00 AM and I was sitting in FC2. I took my mobile and messaged her:

“Hi. I am dressed in blue and black. Sitting near Goldline counter”

The clock ticked slowly… Very slowly… Every moment passed like a year…

A beautiful angel dressed in red was coming towards me… I couldn’t take my eyes off her… It should be Jyothi… I was dazzled by her elegance… With great control over my excitement I waited for her to come closer… A little closer… Yes… Take one more step dear… That’s it!!!

And she went past me…

I felt a pat on my shoulder. I turned and saw a guy.

“Hi. How are you?”

“I am fine… Uh… And who are you?”

“I am Jyothi…”

An Arranged Love Story

Autobiography of a Middle Class Woman - An Arranged Love Story

On one cool rainy morning in July, 2007

Woken up by the cool breeze that invaded through the little gap between the blanket and bed, I opened my eyes. My eyes stuck on the man who’s standing near the window side, near my side of the bed, throwing out circles of smoke into the rain.

Still looking at the man, I tried to lock myself inside the blanket. Nothing can stop this man, he won’t change. He wont change unless he felt himself.

You started smoking in the morning”, I asked.

What do you want, Kutta?” he replied.

“Why I want? Don’t you know that it’s killing you?” I asked in fake anger.

Start fighting in the morning itself, give me a break“.

You know, what day is it today, Sunnichaa?”

“Do I have amnesia? It’s been 25, right..?

“Yeah, 25 years. Ohh, My holy Christ, how I lived with this old man for this long?”, I prayed in humor.
“I’ve been asking the same, myself and don’t forget, you’re nearing half century too.” He told with a smile, which is itself was an anniversary gift for me.

“Now, wake up and make me tea, its 7am” He gave a gentle noisy slap on my arms so as to wake me up.
“You never allow me to sleep.” I complained waking up from my bed. I knew my statement was false, coz, it’s him who wakes up earlier than me.

After freshening up, I went to kitchen. There’s already half cup of hot tea in the blue Eagle flask. He has woken up half hour before me, made one and half cup of tea and has left me my usual quota of half cup. I poured the tea from the flask, added two teaspoons of sugar and stirred it.

Then I went to check if milk has come. I opened the front door, and the milk bottle, near the newspaper in the sit out. I took both, and went back to kitchen to make another two cups of tea.

I opened the milk bottle, poured it into the milk cooker, placed it on the burner and lighted it. Then I started enjoying the half cup of tea.

“25 years, life is moving so fast. I thought.

Those days, even its 25 years old, was still crystal clear like the rain water.

Memories rushed at me as the cool breeze through the window soothed my skin.

I had just finished my graduation in Zoology when the proposal came. It was my daddy who told me about it.
“Annie, his name is Mathew, but his family name is Sunny. 29 years old, Manager in Bank of Cochin, now posted in Kattapana”. Daddy was happy in telling me about the proposal, because he was a First Class Graduate from a famous college in our district and was the second and last son from a well reputed family in his village, which is 20 kms from my home. His family was well enough for our family, and he had no liabilities.

I didn’t know what answer to give. And I think I wasn’t supposed to give any answer. 25 years back, things weren’t like this. Girls had no choice, but to accept their familiy’s decision. My elder sister was brave enough to fight for her love, and she eventually succeeded in it. My father wasn’t that conservative as the other folks of the time. Seeing the family and education of the guy, my father agreed to surrender to her wish whole heartedly.

But, I had no love. I had no one, though I was fair and good looking. I had had received so many love letters that time. But none of the guy felt good enough to catch my heart. So I had no option, other than to give up to my parents wish. But, I had that trust in my parents that they would find the right guy for me.

The next week, Sunnichaa (Sunnichaa is the abbreviated form of Sunny Achaayan, achaayan is something Christian girls in our area call their husband) came to my house with his relatives. My folks had a long chat with his folks, they agreed upon the dowry and fixed the date to three weeks later. Meanwhile I served tea for the visitors. I had a quick glance at him. To be honest, the first impression wasn’t that welcoming. He was dark, 5′10” tall, well built and his face, decorated by a thick well trimmed moustache reflected his rough character. He seemed like a cruel Police officer in the Malayalam movies and I was really terrified by his brown eyes.

When they left, I told Mummy that I’m scared of that guy. Mummy said that he seemed like a responsible guy, and he would be able to manage a lazy, talkative girl like me. I wasn’t satisfied by that assurance and my later nights were often disturbed with nightmares. I was afraid that he would be strict and independent freedom loving character will be caged by him.

One week later, marriage engagement ceremony was held in my house. His relatives and my people came for it, but he wasn’t able to attend it. ( I was actually lucky to see him at least before marriage, which some other friends hadn’t got)

Two weeks after engagement, on a Sunday, July 25th we were married in the church in his village. The Bishop blessed us, and we posed for photos right after the marriage and before the grand lunch which has been arranged for the people. Still smile rarely seemed to visit his face. He appeared tough as if someone has looted his entire smile. Thanks to late arrival of colour photos, otherwise our pair would’ve resembled the opposite players on the chess board in those snaps.

Two days after marriage, we left to his workplace 150 km from our place, on his Yezdi bike. I felt like going on a trip with a stranger, though I’ve been with him for the last two days, which were busy with visiting relatives.

He kick started the bike, I sat on the pillion seat and my hands searched for a place to hold. His right solid hand grabbed my right hand, placed it over his flat, but solid waist. He turned his head over his shoulders, smiled at me and asked “Shall, we start?”.

That wasn’t a fake smile; it was a smile from the heart. That’s what I always liked at him for the past 25 years. He smiles not so often, but when he does it, it is genuine, deep inside from his heart.
I’ll say, that smile, his action of grabbing of my hands, which was my turning point in my life. That moment, I felt I was secure in the world. If trust is something you care in a relation, that was the moment, I started trusting the man with the stone cold look. That was the moment, which has laid the foundation for the pillars that hold the next 25 years of my life.

Through out the journey, my hands were gripped strongly on his waist like a kid holding the hands of his father. We were welcomed warmly by his colleagues in his work place, and the neighbours around our new home. On the coming days, I learnt about him from my experience and from his colleagues and the innocent neighbours in that area. He was a man of principle, but loved and respected by the people around. The respect came from his straight forwardness, for his lack of acting and for his stubbornness. He was simple, but strong in his heart, with a mind which never accepted failure. He couldn’t be influenced, he always had his opinions and he stood for his word at any situation.

His colleagues were afraid of him, but it was a fear out of respect. He was notorious for his fights with his seniors, where he made them defenseless with his notes. But they all respected him for his punctuality and his efficiency and dedication. He always had friends and he was famous for his quick wits and dialogues in sharp humor, but he knew where to draw the line.

Though scared with his colleagues remarks, I knew somewhere in my heart, I had started loving the man. It wasn’t a forced love; it was love that has sprouted from my heart for the man of my life.  He wasn’t a man of show-off; he knew nothing of showing love. His conversations were neither romantic as in movies, nor his gestures. He never mastered the art of gifting, but I counted him as a gift for my life. But I started sensing the love which hid in his words, and in his actions.

I always felt secured and strong in his company. I was actually proud to be the better half of my man. Although we were so different in our nature and in our habits, I felt he was the right person for me. In a way, he completed me for what I’m not, and I pray, I completed him.

He was a good smoker and I hate smokers, but later I started liking the smell of his sweat which is mixed with the smoke of the Charminar cigarette he smoked. Later in my life, I hugged his shirts which carried his odour, whenever I was feeling lonely for his distant visits to the work places. The fragrance of those shirts was always comforting for me and was strong to fill me with security.

11 months later, when I was taken to the hospital for delivery, I sensed his pain and worries in his eyes. I wasn’t afraid that moment because he was with me. After delivery, when he came to my room, to visit me and the baby girl; from the thick smell of cigarette smoke, I could guess the number of cigarettes he had puffed out of tension. He was smiling, carrying the baby in his arms and his look at me with the pride of a father was more than enough for a less ambitious woman like me.

But, during these 25 years, we’ve fighted countless times. I disliked his stubbornness in some moments, and the 8 year age difference wasn’t a barrier for me to have long fights with him. The fights were always verbal, and even in those fights, he was controlled, not letting even a bad disgraceful word from his mouth. Even in the extremes of the fight, he never called me my real name, or the “edi, podi, nee, aval” words. I’ve wondered in my life how he managed to do it. He always called me “Kutta”which meant ‘dear one‘, inspired from one of the famous Malayalam movie of that time. The way he respected the woman in me was really a matter of envy for others. There were occasions where I’ve forgotten my real name was because I never heard it in my house. It was either Kutta from him or Mummy from our children. Still our relatives and our family friends are amazed by my pet name, because it was hard for them to spot that soft part of Sunnichaa.
If the fights were real serious, he would keep his silence for the coming days. He never talked to me or to our children. Our children always complained of this nature of him, for not talking to them for our fights. Later the reason was revealed to me. “If I talk to our children, and keep avoiding you, you’ll be hurt more with the avoidance.” So as the part of the plan of hurting me less, he burdened himself in keeping the anger to himself.

He gave up his drinking when he understood that I hated the habit, and my love and respect for him grew even more when I saw him turned down the offers and compulsions from his friends, in a gentle, polite yet solid manner, just as the way he refused to accept any bribes or favours the people offered in his job.
Later in my life, I was amazed by the financial management of him. From his salary, we had the opportunity in living with enough luxury of the people of our standard. His Yezdi changed to the Bullet, then an ambassador to fiat, then to Maruthi and then to Hyundai Accent. But, he wasn’t luxurious; he knew where to spend, and how to spend. Even during the times, when we were building our beautiful home, or when he was jobless for six months due to the amalgamation of Bank of Cochin to State Bank of India, he cared enough to not pass the worries to me. That was his nature, he always carried the pain with himself, and he enjoyed un-sharing it. He saved enough to build the house, a two storied eight room shopping complex on our inherited land, and proudly marry our daughter to her new family. He was so brilliant, so accurate in his planning and calculations…

25 years, I still don’t feel that I’m reaching my fifties. I am still young in mind, happy and satisfied because he allowed me to be myself. I still feel like the young lady who started the journey with a stranger in some unknown solid trust.

PHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE”

The recollection of the past years were interrupted by the whistle of the milk cooker. Tears filled my eyes as a gratitude to the almighty for the life I’ve had.

Wiping off tears of happiness, I made tea from the steamy milk. I poured the tea into the cup, and the rest into the flask. I brought the cup and the flask to the drawing room where he was performing the art of reading newspaper along with watching television.

He dint looked at me, he took the cup and start sipping it. I looked at him, and asked.
“Don’t  you feel to give me anything as a present for our anniversary?”
“Kutta, How many anniversaries we had till now?” he countered.
“I believe its 25, 25 long years”.
“How many times, I’ve gifted you anything for our anniversary?”
“Two times, during our first one and the one after our house warming”
“So, during last 25 times, only two times, I’ve gifted you. So Kutta, tell me,  what made you think that I should gift you this time”

“C’mon Sunnichaa, its our 25th, silver jubilee of my miserable life with you. I should be given a reward right??” I teased him.

“So only you deserve reward, nothing for me who suffered a lazy, irresponsible, naughty creature like you?”

“Ok, I’ll give you the reward”. I suddenly got up from my chair, and kissed hard on his cheeks. His sharp stubble pinched my lips.

“Don’t try to persuade with your love expressions, you know I wont fall for it..” He laughed, teasing at me.

“Anyways, since you’ve asked, there’s a small blue case in my brown pants hanged in the bedroom. Kuttan can take it as my gift”.

I rushed to the bedroom in anxiety, as if a child runs for his toy. I checked the pockets of his brown pants and my hand caught a small case.

I brought it out, it was a small navy blue case with the name of a famous jewelers embedded on it. I opened the cute little case, and found a beautiful golden ring with a blue-sapphire stone mounted on it. I ran back to him with the ring.

“C’mon Sunnichaa, put the ring on my finger”. I asked him with a smile which expressed all my happiness. He took the ring and wore it on my right ring finger. The ring was perfect for my fingers, exact size. (How can he be wrong? )

“What if I haven’t asked you for the gift? You would have given me it voluntarily?” I asked looking at him.

“No, I’ll give it to our servant then; I think her lucky stone is same as yours”. He slapped my at my shoulders and we both laughed out loud.

I always looked at the new generation who were afraid to have an arranged marriage. The world has changed, but I believe Love hasn’t. I was able to love a man more than myself, even though I have seen him just once before marriage. I couldn’t digest the modern ‘Love break-ups‘ and ‘Move-On‘ attitude, may be its my ignorance. But if you’ve faith in your guy, if you feel secured in his presence, if he has a heart which catches your mind even before you think about it, then I’ll say, he’s your guy. I know it, because that was what I learnt from us.
